When Java was launched in 1995, the original target market was desktops and devices. Over the years, Java became the number 1 language for server-side and back-end development. The front-end, including desktops and devices, became less important.
With JavaFX 2, Oracle is trying to re-launch Java on the Desktop. JavaFX 2 is the next-generation graphical framework for Java, and it will replace AWT and Swing.
JavaFX 2 combines the lessons learnt from AWT/Swing and competitors like Flash/Flex and Silverlight with the experience from a number of web-based frameworks.
In this event, we will give an introduction to JavaFX by showing real-world examples. Since JavaFX is basically Java, the examples will be easily understood by a Java developer.
The following topics will be covered:
Anatomy and high-level architecture of JavaFX
How to create a JavaFX Application – HelloWorld?
JavaFX Controls, how to use them
Custom components in JavaFX
Client-server communication

Johan Vos started to work with Java in 1995. He worked on the Java Linux port with the Blackdown team. He has been doing Java consulting and development for a number of customers in completely different areas. Over the years, he has been active in a number of Java-based community projects, e.g. OSGi, the Glassfish project and JFXtras.org.
With LodgON, the company he co-founded, he is mainly working on Java solutions for social networking software.
Since he can't make a choice between embedded development and enterprise development, his main focus is on end-to-end Java, combining the strengths of back-end systems and embedded devices. His favourite technologies are currently Java EE / Glassfish at the backend and JavaFX at the frond-end.
